The Family Studies concentration with the Bachelor's of Interdisciplinary Studies ecompasses many facets of child and
human development as well as addresses issues within the family unit. The courses presents many topics, concepts, and
theories that families may deal with.
Human Development:
This course taught me about how humans develop in many different stages. I learned many theories about all the
many behavioral, physical, and emotional growths that we go through in our lives. I learned about the many different
stages in our lives from the time we are conceived to the time we die.
Marriage and Family Relationships:
In this course, I learned about many issues and conflicts that married couples come across. I learned about different
types of marriages, relationships, and family units that exist in the word today.
Fundamentals of Marriage and Family Therapy:
This course went over the research methods that Family Therapists use. I learned about many different concepts
and theories that help explain issues between married couples and families as a whole. Key theorists such as Freud,
Bandura, and others were talked about to stress the importance of their findings and how to apply their theories within therapy.
Infant/Toddler Development:
This course taught me about the many different stages in development that infants and toddlers go through. It teaches
about the behavioral, physical, and cognitive changes that happen during the infant and toddler stages. I learned about
important milestones within the first couple of years in a child's life. I also learned how important the first three
years are for a child.
Family, Ethnic, and Cultural Diversity:
While enrolled in this course, I learned about the many differences found within families throughout the world.
Topics discussing different ethnicities and origins made the course very interesting. I learned about many different
religions, celebrations, and traditions celebrated by all kinds of families in our world. I learned about different
cultures around the world and how our own culture and ethnicity plays into our own family and traditions.
Parent-Adolescent Relationships:
I learned a lot about Adolescents while taking this course. This course taught me about how adolescents develop
cognitively, physically, and behaviorally. I learned about the many issues they face within their family units, such
as divorce, neglect, and many other conflicts that arise within the family. I also learned how adolescents make decisions,
why they get involved in risky behavior, and why their social surroundings are important to them.
